1.5 Engineering Notation

A coefficient from 1 to less than 1000 and an exponent that is a multiple of 3.

Core idea

Engineering notation uses a coefficient from 1 to less than 1000 and a power of 10 whose exponent is a multiple of 3. [1, pp. 6–8]

Examples:

  • 27 000 = 27 × 10³
  • 0.00047 = 470 × 10⁻⁶
